Hannibal Regional Honors the Legacy of Local Couple

April 08, 2026

Hannibal Regional Foundation announced on April 2, 2026, the largest gift in the organization’s history, a transformational estate gift of $9.25 million from longtime supporters Harold and Laura Robertson of Hannibal.
The Robertson’s extraordinary generosity reflects a nearly 20-year relationship with Hannibal Regional rooted in gratitude, compassion, and a deep appreciation for the care they received. Their journey began in early 2006, when Harold and Laura were receiving medical care, and the Hannibal Regional team stepped up to personally assist them in many ways including travel back and forth from the hospital during a winter storm.  This simple but meaningful act of kindness left a lasting impression. That moment started a relationship that would grow into decades of support for the organization and its mission.
Over the years, the Robertsons made numerous contributions to Hannibal Regional, including a $500,000 gift in 2007 to establish the Clinical Decision Unit (CDU), along with support for the Believe Campaign and the Building BETTER Tomorrows Campaign.
Harold Robertson passed away in 2019, and Laura Robertson recently passed away at the age of 101. Through their final gift, they have ensured their legacy of compassion and generosity will continue to impact patients and families for generations to come. “This is a truly remarkable and humbling gift,” shared Wendy Harrington, Hannibal Regional Foundation President and CEO. “Harold and Laura were more than donors; they were part of the Hannibal Regional family. Their story is a powerful reminder that the compassion our team members show each day can leave a lasting impact far beyond the moment of care.”
A portion of the Robertson’s gift will be used to establish the “Excellence in Care” Award, an ongoing recognition program honoring Hannibal Regional team members who go above and beyond to provide exceptional, compassionate care to their patients. The award reflects the very experience that inspired the Robertson’s lifelong support. “Our long relationship with the Robertsons started with our team offering excellence in care,” said Todd Ahrens, Hannibal Regional Healthcare System President and CEO. “This award will ensure their legacy lives on by celebrating the compassion, dedication and excellence our team members provide to our patients every day.”
In addition to supporting team member recognition, the gift will help advance future initiatives that strengthen patient care and enhance healthcare services across the region. Hannibal Regional leaders shared the announcement during a press conference held on April 2, where they honored the Robertson’s legacy and expressed gratitude for their extraordinary commitment to the organization and the community.  Estate gifts offer a very meaningful way for donors to leave a legacy in their community.  For more information on estate planning and ways to give to Hannibal Regional Foundation, contact the Foundation at 573-629-3577 or at hannibalregional.org.
