Maywood - Sad News

Loretta Bringer
The weather was typical for Missouri this week. We had some very cold mornings and some pleasant afternoons. The bald eagles are hunting near the Troublesome Creek, which has put Shepherd family ducks in danger!
South Union Baptist Church gathered for worship this morning and celebrated the New Year with Communion. Prayers continue for Linda Durst Denemark, who has been having some health issues.
I enjoyed several visitors this week. My brother, John Jones, of Quincy stopped by. I also had a nice visit from my nephews Randy Bringer of Arkansas, and Rodney Bringer, and his wife Terri.
My brother John and I discussed some of the former businesses in Maywood. John remembered coming home from high school and stopping at the ice cream store, where he would get a triple dip ice cream cone for one nickel!
Rick and Mauvoreen Meyers recently returned from a trip to San Antonio, Texas, with their children, Brent and Sarah, and their families. The visited the Alamo and the Riverwalk, and enjoyed the visit with all of their family together.
Happy New Year!
“ With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts.” Eleanor Roosevelt.

Editors Note: It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of our beloved Maywood correspondent, Loretta Bringer. Her daughter Rachel Shepherd, wrote the following,
Mom died this morning, January 5, 2026, and her arrangements will be with Duker and Haugh in Quincy. Mom helped me with the news on Sunday evening before she died, and she was always so appreciative of the many kind comments she received about her writing, especially her stories about the history of Maywood.  I will be forever grateful for the Sunday evenings we spent together working on the "Maywood News," hearing many of her stories about her childhood for the first time, and witnessing her love and care for the many friends and neighbors she had encountered throughout the years.
Rachel also said, “Bobby and I would be very grateful for your prayers for our family, particularly our sons, during this time of grief, because even though we knew this day was coming, I'm not sure we can ever be fully prepared. “
Loretta Bringer had written the Maywood News for almost 20 years. Her mother, Beulah Jones had been the Maywood correspondent for many years before she passed away and then Loretta took over. Loretta was very dedicated to her column, often mentioning memories from her childhood, history of Maywood and the Maywood Church, where she was a long time member.
Funeral services will be held at The Maywood First Baptist Church on Monday, Jan. 12, 2026 with visitation at 9:30 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m.
