SPECIAL TO THE LEWIS COUNTY PNJ
Making the long trek into Montgomery City for Saturday’s Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 1, Sectional 2 Track Meet at Montgomery County High School, Canton Lady Tiger track athletes Sophia Slater and Dannica Lewis looked to earn another week of practice with a top-four finish in their respective events.
First up for Canton was Lewis in the Class 1 Girls 100m hurdles.
Hovering near the middle of the pack the entire race, Lewis managed to edge Polo’s Chloey Carr for the fourth-and-final state qualifying spot with a fourth-place time of 18.23.
Jumping at state last year as a sophomore, Slater was also looking to extend her junior season of Canton High School (CHS) Track and Field to this weekend’s MSHSAA State Track and Field Championships scheduled to be held at Jefferson City High School’s Adkins Stadium.
In spite of jumping below her distance from districts, Slater also posted a fourth-place mark of 9.60 meters in the Class 1 Girls Triple Jump to join Lewis in Jefferson City.
Lewis will compete in the preliminaries of the Class 1 Girls 100m hurdles on Friday, May 23 at 11:10 a.m., while Slater will go before her Lady Tiger teammate in the Class 1 Girls Triple Jump at 10 a.m., inside the Roberta and Dennis Licklider Track Complex.
