RICHARD K. HESS

March 20, 2024

Richard K. Hess, 77, of Quincy, Ill., died December 30, 2023 at the Illinois Veteran’s Home.

Richard was born in Quincy on February 23, 1946 to Edward & Esther (Kerwin) Hess. He married Linda Bastert on June 19, 1971 in the Quincy College Chapel. They welcomed son Karington on September 30, 1986.

Richard worked as an entrepreneur and alongside his father, Edward, at their family-owned company Hess Investments where he was a stockbroker. He was a dreamer and a visionary who was often ahead of his time.

Richard served in the U.S. Navy from 1968-1970 aboard the USS Kitty Hawk. During his time in the Navy, he established lifelong friendships with folks from across the nation. They kept in touch throughout the years through visits, phone calls, and hunting trips. Richard was an avid outdoorsman who loved the company of his friends over the hunt itself. He also was a tennis player and while at Quincy College, won the Men’s City Tennis Championship title.

It was often said that Richard never met a stranger. His warm personality, gentle soul, and natural charisma made him a friend to many. Richard was a natural storyteller with a penchant for good natured mischief who was always looking for a good time and was the life of the party! He always had a smile on his face and a thirst for life.

Richard lives on in the hearts of all who knew him and shared in the vibrant tapestry of his life. Many may have lived as long but few lived as well as Richard K. Hess. Long live King Richard!

Survivors include his wife Linda Hess of LaGrange, Mo.; son Karington K. Hess and daughter-in-law Abigail of Roanoke, Va.; niece Melissa (Daniels) Challenger, niece Lori (Daniels) Littlejohn, and nephew Justin Daniels, all of Florida; in-laws John (Pat) Bastert, Bob (Friend Sandy) Bastert, Carol (Joe) Kreckler, and Dan (Nancy) Bastert, and many, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews along with countless friends and loved ones.

He was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws Robert and Delores Bastert, sister, Barbara (Hess) Daniels, sister-in-law, Sharon (Bastert) Mitok and a cousin Edwin Apenbrink.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, March 30, 2024 at Dick Brothers Brewery, 829 York Street, Suite B, Quincy, Ill. Friends and family are invited to stop by and share a memory anytime from 3 to 9 p.m. Tally Ho!
