Canton Library Book Club

The Canton Public Library announces the upcoming book selections for their Brave New Book Club. The book club meets the first Wednesday of alternating months at 5:00 PM and is named for the first book that group read and discussed in April of 2022, Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World. All adults are welcome to read and join the discussions.

On February 7 at 5:00 PM, the club will discuss Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. The library has several copies available for checkout.

Upcoming book discussions are as follows: April 3 - Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann; June 5 - D-Day Girls by Sarah Rose; August 7 - Finding Dorothy by Elizabeth Letts and October 2 - As Bright As Heaven by Susan Meissner

Library Director Mary Kay Lane says, “We strive to offer a variety of styles and genres throughout the year. Over the past years, we have read non-fiction, classics, best sellers, and even young adult and children’s fiction. It’s a great way to try some books you might otherwise not gravitate to.”

Several weeks before each meeting, the library receives kits of ten copies of each book from the Mid-Continent Public Library. “Many libraries throughout the state offer book club kits for circulation and we are grateful to them,” says Lane. “It is a resource we normally could not provide our patrons.” Often the kits will include large print as well as regular print, and sometimes a book on CD. Library patrons can check out a book at the library, or utilize the Libby app for downloadable eBooks and eAudiobooks if that option exists for the books. Participants read the books on their own, then meet for discussion.

“Discussions have been lively and a lot of fun,” says Lane. “We all bring our own experiences to our reading, and hearing other people’s experiences with a book is a wonderful way to gain new insights.”

All adults are welcome to participate in the Brave New Book Club. Some book selections allow for younger readers as well. For more information, contact the library at 573-288-5279.
