Veterans Memorial Park Opening Held

The City of Canton Mo., held a formal opening of the Phase 2 resurfaced trail in Veterans Memorial Park at 1002 Brose Avenue. The project was funded in part by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources by a Scrap Tire Materials Grant. The program diverts scrap tires from landfills and illegal dumps by promoting end-uses for scrap tires. The project at Veterans Memorial Park used 18,825 pounds of recycled rubber, 83% of which was produced using recycled tires. 100 percent of the recycled tires used in the project were from Missouri stock.
The project provided for solid-surfacing 690 feet of trail to a width of five feet and added a 10’ x 16’ pad adjacent to the trail for an accessible picnic table. The full cost of the project was $53,428. Of that amount, $36,641 was funded by the Scrap Tire Materials Grant with the balance being funded by the City of Canton. The bid winner for the project was Taylormade Company of Kansas City, Kan.
The grant for this project aligns with the Department of Natural Resources Waste Management Program and was supported by the Northeast Regional Planning Commmission/Solid Waste Management District. Grants through the Solid Waste Management District have provided for continued development of the Canton Recycling Center and a variety of improvements in City of Canton parks.
