GILMER J. JOHNSTON

Gilmer J. Johnston, 92, of Maywood, Mo., died September 12, 2023 at the Lewis County Nursing Home in Canton.
He was born September 17, 1930 in Philadelphia, Mo., a son of Gilmer and Nora Gast Johnston. He was married to Doris Lucille Stark in 1950 and later married Donna L. DeGroot Wagner in 1983.
Gilmer was a lifelong farmer, fisherman and Jack of all Trades. He was well known in the area for his gardening and vegetables most notably for his Sweet Corn and Watermelon that he grew in the Maywood bottoms. Gilmer was a member of the Maywood Baptist Church. He also loved to mushroom and arrowhead hunt and visit with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Donna of Maywood who is currently residing in the Lewis County Nursing Home; sons, William Johnston and Daniel (Jennie) Johnston both of Maywood; step children, Bill (Dawn) Wagner of Maywood and Gina (Kenneth) Heinecke of LaPraire, IL; half-brothers, Glenn Schroder of LaGrange and Larry (Carolyn) Schroder of Maywood, Mo.; several grandchildren including Daniel Johnston of Quincy, Tasha (Luke) Rothweiler of Maywood, William Christopher (Kim) Johnston of Ewing, Diana (Sam) DeMoss II of LaGrange, Dustin Johnston of Palmyra, Teala Wagner of Quincy, Keely (Derek) Wheeler of Hannibal, Miranda (John) Schreiner of Chicago, Ill., Alanna (Drew) Yingling of Chatham, Ill., Roberta (Jeff) Ostermueller of Quincy, Daniel Fletcher formerly of Lewistown and Matthew (Candi) Fletcher of Lewistown; several great and great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Selmer, Eldon, Raymond and Harold Johnston, one sister Mary Ruth Carter, one grandson Evan Johnston and one granddaughter Brianna Baker.
Services were held September 19, 2023 in the Ball-Davis Funeral Home in Ewing with Pastor Lance Bonnell officiating. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. until time of services at the Ball-Davis Funeral Home
