Flag Retirement Ceremony June 10 & 17
Otto Bruner Post 170 held a flag retirement ceremony June 10 at the La Grange Fire Station. Legion Members, La Grange community members, Council member, Police Department, and Palmyra Troop 161 Scout Master retired approximately 750 American Flags. Otto Bruner Post 170 held another ceremony on June 17 in Canton at the American Legion Hall. Legion Members, Canton Community members, Police Department, and Palmyra Troop 161 Scoutmaster participated and retired approximately 175 flags. It is the goal of the American Legion to hold a retirement ceremony each year as close to June 14, which is Flag Day.
Otto Bruner Post Commander David Blickhan stated “Flags should be honorably retired. Flags that have become tattered and worn, can no longer honorably represent the United States. This is why local American Legion Posts collect such flags year-round for retirement ceremonies. The flags can come from residents, businesses, government buildings or anywhere, and can be freely donated for retirement.” Commander Blickhan wanted to remind residents that there are two retirement collection boxes. One is located at the American Legion Hall in Canton, located at 205 N. 5th Street. The other collection box is located at the La Grange Fire Station.
