RAMON HADFIELD

June 15, 2023

Ramon Earl Hadfield, 89, of Columbia, Missouri, died June 2, 2023, at The Neighborhoods by TigerPlace. Ramon was born March 10, 1934, in Ewing, Missouri to Earl Hadfield and Wilma (Merrell) Hadfield.
Ramon graduated from Ewing High School in 1952, where he loved to participate in sports, especially basketball. He continued his education at CBT College in Springfield, Missouri.

In 1952 Ramon joined the United States Naval Reserves and was later called to active duty from 1956-1958. He spent two years in Sasebo, Japan as a personnel officer.
On November 20th, 1958, Ramon married the love of his life, Shirley Shires, and they built a life together in Ewing. They loved small town life and being near their families. Ramon was highly involved in the community. He served as President of the Ewing Senior Living Center and was an active member of the Bank of LaBelle Board of Directors and Highland High School Booster Club. At a young age, Ramon purchased a block of land in Ewing and developed a lovely country neighborhood, which became known as the Hadfield Subdivision. Many families over the years have enjoyed calling Hadfield Drive home.
Ramon worked at Illinois State Bank from 1958 to 1964 and then continued his career with Moorman Manufacturing in Quincy, Illinois from 1964 to 1993. Because of his outgoing personality and strong work ethic, he was a successful salesman, working on the “Missouri Mules” team led by his brother Roger. Ramon developed many close relationships throughout Ralls and Monroe counties during his years in the feed business and was a frequent lunch guest of the many farm families he served. He was known to most in the area as “The Moorman Man.”
As much as Ramon took pride in his work, his greatest source of pride and happiness was his family. Ramon and Shirley were rarely apart, and enjoyed 64 ½ years of marriage together. Ramon was a faithful servant of God, and was baptized at the young age of seven. He was a member of the First Assembly of God Church and attended the First Baptist Church of Ewing for many years.
In 2003, Ramon and Shirley relocated to Columbia, MO to be near their daughter, her husband, and grandchildren. They rarely missed a sporting event, dance recital, or school program. Although he spent most of his life in Ewing, he made many new friends in Columbia and enjoyed morning coffee chats at McDonalds.
Ramon enjoyed the St. Louis Cardinals, Mizzou Tigers, and everything-basketball. Every winter, he and Shirley could be found on the sidelines cheering on the Mizzou Women’s basketball team.
Ramon will be remembered by family and friends for his ever-present smile, his infectious laugh, his kindness, and generosity. Ramon took care of many family members over the years in their time of need. He could always be counted on to lend a helping hand.
Ramon is survived by his wife of nearly 65 years, Shirley Hadfield, of Columbia, his daughter Stephanie Short and her husband John of Columbia, two grandchildren, Emily Short and Jacob Short of Columbia; his siblings Richard Hadfield (Connie) of Springfield, Illinois, and Ruth (Barr) McReynolds of Quincy, Illinois, and sister-in-law Donna Hadfield of Quincy, Illinois, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
Ramon is preceded in death by his parents Earl and Wilma, and his brother Roger.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the First Baptist Church of Ewing, Mo., or the Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital in Columbia, Mo.
The family would like to recognize and thank the nursing staff at The Neighborhoods as well as Hospice Compassus for their care and support.
Arrangements are under the direction of Nilson-Millard Cremation and Burial Center, 5611 E. St Charles Road, Columbia, MO 65202. (573) 474-8443. Condolences may be left online for the family at www.millardfamilychapels.
