Plein Aire Event in Canton

May 01, 2023

Plans are underway for the Sixth annual Bluff River Paint Out. The communities of Hannibal and Canton Mo. will host the two-day plein air (outdoor) painting event, with Hannibal hosting on May 6 and Canton on Sunday, May 7. Plein air events invites artists to communities where they capture the community by creating paintings outdoors and on-site. Participants will paint during the day, with art created daily in each community, which will be offered for sale at that evening’s reception at the respective locations.

Area artists, as well as artists willing to travel to the areas, are encouraged to participate. For information regarding artist guidelines and registration, interested participants should go to the Gallery page of hannibalarts.com to find information on the River Bluffs Paint Out. An artist registration form can be found at https://hannibalarts.com/gallery/river-bluffs-paint/. Artists can choose the location they wish to participate. Those painting on private property are responsible for securing permission.

Sunday artists need to register the day of the event between the hours of 7 am -9 am at Canton City Hall 400 Lewis St. All canvases/papers must be stamped at that time with the events special seal to be considered for competition. Participants must be 18 years of age. Each artist may enter up to 2 pieces for competition. Cost to participate is $25. In Canton, the public is invited to attend a free reception to meet the artists and view and or purchase their displayed art at City Hall beginning at 4 pm. There will be three places awarded to artists, $100 for 3d, $300 for 2d, and $500 for 1st.

The River Bluffs Paint Out is a partnership of the Hannibal Arts Council, Canton Area Arts Council and the City of Canton. Additional partners include the Hannibal Convention and Visitors Bureau and Culver-Stockton College. Financial assistance for the Canton portion of the project has been provided by the Missouri Association of Community Arts Agencies and the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency.
