SIDNEY (SID CASEBIER

March 22, 2023

Sidney (Sid) Joseph Casebier, 94, of Canton, Mo., died March 14, 2023, in his home near Monticello.

Sid was born April 11, 1928, in Burnt Prairie, Illinois to Ben, Sr and Essie (Harris) Casebier. He married Nancy McGrath on November 22, 1958, in Memphis, Mo. She preceded him in death August 22, 2019.
Sid was a Veteran of the US Army, serving in Korea from November 1950 to April 1952. He was a member of Co. C 155th Infantry 31st Division serving as a mortar operator. He met his future wife, Nancy, in Springfield, Illinois on his 24th birthday, April 11, 1952, while home on 30 day leave. He was honorably discharged August 1952 with the rank of Staff Sargant, being awarded the Bronze Star, for inflicting heavy casualties under intense enemy fire, using a close-range carbine to shoot through surrounding forces, while moving his mortar position.

Sid was a life-long farmer, starting life in Southern Illinois and followed farming along with his two brothers making his way to Northeast Missouri to settle near Monticello, Missouri in 1968. He never met a challenge he didn’t face head on, with no fear and fiercely independent. His greatest love, more than farmer, was his children and grandchildren.

Later years Sid enjoyed collecting classic cars and traveling the country to car auctions with his brother Ben and spending winters in Arizona with his wife Nancy, brother Ben and sister-in-law Juanita.

Survivors include children Nancy Jo (Alan) Berhorst of Canton and Jeff (Diane) Casebier of Canton; five grandchildren, Jeffrey and Jordan Berhorst of Canton, Michael (fiancé Grace Murphy), Bradley and Sydney Casebier of Canton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Brothers Ben and Sam Casebier, sister in laws Mary Lou Casebier and Juanita Casebier Haines; nephew Charles Casebier.
