GEORGE WILLIAM HOFFMAN

George William Hoffman, age 91, of Canton, Mo., died Sunday, October 23, 2022 at 12:55 a.m. at Lewis County Nursing Home in Canton, Mo.

George, also endeared as Sonny and GW by friends and family, was born July 8, 1931 at his parent’s rural Canton home, a son of Stanley and Mildred Hoffman.  He married Marilyn Sue Cox of LaGrange, Mo., at the Wyaconda Baptist Church on July 18, 1964.

He graduated from Culver-Stockton college in 1954 with a B.S. in Business, subsequently enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1954 serving as a clerk while stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso Texas being honorably discharged in 1956. Upon his return to Canton, George began his 35 year career at the Canton Post Office where he retired November 30, 1990.  His life was filled with a wide variety of activities, community work, and charitable organizations.  George spent his life collecting antiques, researching genealogy, and farming the family Century Farm where he milked Guernseys, raised hogs, cattle, and sheep. He was active in the community at Wyaconda Baptist Church serving as Sunday school superintendent and trustee for many years.  He was an active member of the Masonic (Craft Lodge 287) in Canton Mo., receiving his 50 year service pin where he also played the piano for meetings and events. 

George was also a member of the Eastern Star chapter affiliated with the Canton Masonic Lodge as well as a 4-H project leader.  George also enjoyed submitting both cooking and photography items to the Lewis County Fair while involved in 4-H as well as later in life to remain active. He also enjoyed being an active community member represented by his involvement in Heartland Resources Inc, the Forest Grove Cemetery Board, Sr. Housing Board, election official, and working at Davis Funeral Home, all of which allowed George to stay connected to the people of the community which he missed after retiring from the Post Office.

 He is survived by his wife of 58 years Marilyn Sue (Cox), two daughters Debra (Ed) Schoenfelt (grandchildren: Alex, Zachery and Macenzie); Maria Baker (grandchild Demi), one son John (Sarah) Hoffman (grandchildren: Faith, Reese and Rowan), great grandchildren (son and daughter of Alex) Lucas and Nora Schoenfelt.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 26, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. will be held at the Davis Funeral Home in Canton, Mo., with Rev. Paul Kinney officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be in Wyaconda Cemetery near Canton.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 25, 2022 from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Davis Funeral Home in Canton, Mo., with a Masonic Service at 7:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are may be made to Heartland Resources Inc. of Ewing Mo.
