LARRY CARSKADON

March 16, 2022

Larry Gordon Carskadon died peacefully at his daughter Maria’s home, March 11, 2022 with daughter Tami by his side. Larry spent his last few days surrounded by family and listening to his favorite music from the 60s and 70s (his girls will always remember him belting out tunes in the car) and Amazing Grace (one of his all-time favorite songs and always made him remember his grandma who cared for him as he recovered from polio as a child).
Larry was born December 24, 1937 in Canton, Mo., the middle son of Robert and Lenore (Harris) Carskadon. The family eventually moved to Long Beach, Calif., and Larry and brothers Jim and Paul (aka Bill) split their childhood between Canton and Long Beach. At 18 Larry moved to Kansas City, Kan., where he met the love of his life, Nelda Ward, whom he married in 1957. They had two daughters, Tamra (Greg) Foutch of Ashland, Mo., and Maria (Bill) Berhorst of Canton, Mo. In 1973, after the loss of Nelda’s parents, Nelda and Larry moved their family to LaGrange, Mo., to be closer to Larry’s family. While in Kansas City Larry had worked at the Federal Reserve and later as an award-winning insurance salesman, however in LaGrange he worked at the foundry and when asked what he did was always proud to say “I pour iron.” After his girls were grown, Larry bought a semi, became an owner/operator, and for several years he and Nelda travelled the country. Larry used that opportunity to help Nelda reach her goal of visiting all lower 48 states.

In addition to his two daughters, Larry was proud to be Grandpa to BJ (Lisa) Berhorst, Jason (Jennifer) Berhorst, Kassidy (Alison) Berhorst, Wesley Foutch, Tara (Josh) Davis, and Arianna (Collin) Bracey and Great Grandpa (they called him G-pa) to Tedros, Royce, Abel, Temprance, Olivia, Loreli, Gabriella, Kinnik, Munroe, and Cash.
The family will celebrate Larry’s life at a private ceremony at a later date.
