JOHN CLIFFORD SOLTER

March 16, 2022

John Clifford Solter, 80, of LaGrange, Mo., died March 9, 2022 in Lewis County Nursing Home at Canton, Mo.
He was born July 13, 1941 in Jacksonville, Ill., the son of Roy and Catherine Solter. He married Janet Campbell on June 3, 1962. This year, June 3, 2022 they would have been married 60 years.
John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He graduated from

LaGrange High School in 1959.
At an early age, John worked at Solters Superette along with his sisters at his Mom and Dad’s store in LaGrange. His dad taught him how to butcher meat and to work behind the meat counter. There, John served his customers with pride. Everyone in the community knew him. His ability to talk to strangers was amazing, making many friends from California to New York City. He touched many lives with his Christian faith. On Sunday mornings taking his family to church was very important to him, never missing Sunday worship. John was raised and baptized into the faith at the LaGrange Presbyterian Church. When it closed he and his family joined the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. He was president of the congregation, a member of the Chamber of Commerce, a volunteer fireman, served on the City Council, and was a member of the Lions Club of LaGrange.
He owned and operated the La Grange Hardware Store for many years. He retired from RoQuette America at Keokuk in 2006. He was a devoted fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, the St. Louis Blues, and Greenbay Packers. The only thing he didn’t like was dancing. He couldn’t carry a tune either. A few months ago he told Jan “I wished I had danced with you more.” After his retirement he was a greeter for Davis Funeral Home, greeting family and friends. People were God’s Gift to John.

He leaves behind his wife Jan; children, Jerilyn (John Ellison), Janeen (Mick) Fellinger, John Paul Solter and Joann (John) Fields; his grandchildren, D.J.
