EMMA NEALE KING

Mrs. Emma Neale King, 96, of Osage Beach, Missouri, died, January 20, 2016 in Rosewood Manor, Richland, Missouri. She was born in Charlotte, North Carolina on December 15, 1919 and lived there for a number of years. She was the daughter of Ira Lee and Margaret C. Lemmond Black.

Emma Neale was a music teacher all of her life until her retirement in 1984, her most recent position as Assistant Professor of Music at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri. She started her career as a music supervisor in the Charlotte Public Schools, and also taught piano at Queens College in Charlotte. She held the degree BS Music from WCUNC, Greensboro, North Carolina class of 1941 and also the degree MM in Music Theory from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, completing requirements in August 1948.

She was united in marriage to Dana M. King, Jr. in Athens, Ohio on June 12, 1949. He preceded her in death in 1966.

She taught Music Theory at Ohio University, Athens, Ohio, piano in Statesboro, Georgia, Music Theory at George Peabody College for Teachers, Nashville, Tennessee and most recently Music Theory, Music History and piano at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri. She was a past member of the “Singer’s Chapter” DAR in Charlotte, a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Nashville where she served as organist for a time, an active choir member and assistant organist at the First Presbyterian Church in Charlotte in the early 1940’s.

She was a member of Sigma Kappa sorority at Culver-Stockton College, serving as faculty advisor until she retired.

Emma Neale was known for her straightforward manner, her love of history, antiques, art glass, and her appreciation of serious music. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Her many students affectionately called her “Mama King”. One of her former students, Jim Spiers of Grant City, Missouri (C-S-C 1966) wrote of her: “Mrs. King treated us outside of class as she did while we attended. Her ability to be genuine in all situations is a great indicator of her own character. She didn’t just make musicians, she made people.”

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. She is survived by one son, Dr. Dana M. King, III and his wife Lisa of Camdenton; three grandchildren, Dana Michael King, IV and wife Megan of Osage Beach, Missouri, Bryson Earl King and wife Bailey of Columbia, Missouri and Addie A. King of Camdenton, Missouri; a great-grandchild, Kanner Michael King. She has many cousins in Charlotte and surrounding counties as well as numerous internet friends with whom she corresponded regularly.

Funeral services were held January 25, 2016 in Allee-Holman-Howe Funeral Home with visitation prior to services.

Inurnment will be in Nashville, Tennessee at a later date.
