BERNARD ENGLISH

Bernard L. English, 92 of Canton, Missouri died July 22, 2021 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois.

The son of Oval and Eula Lasswell English was born on September 10, 1928 at Williamstown, Missouri.

He was united in marriage to Dorothy Janney and to that union two children were born, Mitchel Ray English and Janna Lee English. On April 23, 1980 he married Mary Dale Butler. She preceded him in death on April 5, 2010.

Bernard graduated from Canton High School in 1947 and attended Chillicothe Business College. He served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Korea and Japan, from October 15, 1950 until October 25, 1952 during the Korean War and was in the active reserves for five years. After leaving the service, he owned and operated a Sinclair filing station. He sold the station and went to work for Janney Construction for many years.

Bernard was a member of the First Baptist Church of Canton, Missouri where he served as a Deacon, Sunday school teacher, Superintendent of Sunday School Department, Board of Trustees and Building Committee. He was also a former Canton Chamber of Commerce member and served as a City of Canton Alderman.

He liked to stay busy. He owned and managed rental property, liked to go camping and riding horses in parades and going to rodeos.

He is survived by two children, Mitchel Ray English of Double Oak, Texas and Janna Lee Little of Bear, Delaware; two brothers, Ray English of Canton, Mo., and Lowell D (Ann) English of Rockwall, Texas; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and a sister-in-law, Jean English.

Graveside funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 28, 2021 at 11 AM at Quincy Memorial Park Cemetery at Quincy, Illinois with Rev. Brian Stone officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by American Legion Post 37.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Canton or Donor’s choice.
