December 28, 2020

Darlene V. (Sommers) Rose, 86, Kansas City, MO, passed away on December 13, 2020 at Menorah Medical Center in Overland Park, KS.

Darlene was born June, 5, 1934 in Keokuk, IA, and she grew up on a farm in Gregory Landing, MO. After graduating from Canton High School in 1952, she moved to Canton, MO and became a book keeper for Rice Wholesale. It was during this time she met her future husband, Raymond Rose. Raymond got a job as an engineer at Convair in Fort Worth, TX. He moved there while engaged to Darlene. They were married in Esther, MO on October, 12, 1956 and Darlene moved to Fort Worth, where they lived from 1956 to 1959. While in Texas, Darlene continued work as a book keeper. They moved to Kansas City, MO when Raymond got a job at Bendix.

Darlene worked as a book keeper for several businesses during her working career. Her favorite and last was when she worked for Lamcraft in Lee’s Summit, MO for 25 years. She worked there from 1989 to October of 2014, when she retired at the age 80! Her coworkers at Lamcraft became like her second family and those friendships continued after her retirement.

Darlene and Raymond moved from Kansas City, MO to Lee’s Summit, MO in 1988, where Darlene was a devoted member of the Lee Summit United Methodist church for many years, where she and Raymond often ushered. In 2013, she became a member of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection when she moved to Brookdale, Wornall Place in Kansas City, MO after Raymond passed away. Darlene loved living at Brookdale. She began making cookies to share with her friends and other residents. She became known as, “The Cookie Lady.” She had a love of cooking which continued throughout her life. She also loved animals and had several along the way. Darlene loved to play games and was very competitive. She routinely played Canasta, Gin Rummy, and Bingo with her Brookdale friends. Darlene was very giving and will be sorely missed at Brookdale.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Rose, parents, John and Mabel Sommers, brother, Bayne Sommers, and sister, Dortha Jean Flynn.

She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Rose (Linda) of Kansas City, MO and step-grandchild, Luka, and daughter Teresa Rose (Erich) of Prairie Village, KS. She also leaves behind her best friend, Sue Morrison and her husband, John of Independence MO, whom she met while living in Fort Worth, TX., as well as her little dog, Logan. She is loved and will be missed.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either Wayside Waifs of Kansas City or Missouri Special Olympics.

Due to COVID 19, a private family service and burial will be held at Forest Grove Cemetery in Canton, MO.
