Canton School Board Meets

The Canton R-V School District Board of Education met on August 19, 2019 for the annual tax rate hearing. The purpose of this hearing was to discuss the history of the local tax levy and present the proposed tax levy for the current fiscal year. Based on the information provided to the District from the Lewis and Clark County governments, Superintendent Jesse Uhlmeyer proposed an overall tax rate of $3.7510 per $100 assessed valuation. The Board adjourned from this hearing and entered into the regular monthly meeting. During open session, the Board approved the consent agenda and financial report. The current balance in Funds 1-4 as of 7/31/2019 was $4,480,614.49. Our unrestricted balance in Fund 1 is currently $1,005,788.98.The Board of Directors was introduced to Officer Justin Allen during open forum. Officer Allen will be serving as the School Resource Officer for the 2019-2020 academic year.

The Board also heard an update on the construction projects from Superintendent Jesse Uhlmeyer. In current business, the Board set the current tax rate at $3.7510 per $100 assessed valuation. The members also selected Stacey Guilfoyle to fill the vacancy on the Board of Directors until the April 2020 election. The non-resident tuition rate for the 2019-2020 school year was set at $7,880.88 and the bus routes were approved. The Board accepted bids from Consolidated Fencing for fence replacement and Hoewing Trucking for snow removal. The Board decided to seek bids for relining a sanitation sewer line that is failing under the 1956 Elementary wing. A Request for Proposals will be published in the upcoming week. The local Special Education Compliance policy was adopted and the Daycare and Adventure Club handbooks were approved.

In executive session, the Board approved hiring Clif Tucker as a high school science teacher, Orlie Yoder as an elementary special education teacher, Michelle Shaffer as an elementary paraprofessional, Carey McDaniel as the daycare coordinator, and Ashley Knapp-Brandenberger as the ELL/ESL/Homeless coordinator.

The Board accepted the resignation of Kelli Oliver from the ELL/ESL/Homeless coordinator position.
