Mrs. Sandra Sue Schnitzer, 79 of Lewistown, Missouri died January 21, 2019 at the Country Aire Retirement Estates at Lewistown.

The daughter of Edward William and Eula Avis Newberry Lewis, born March 11, 1939 in Lewistown, Missouri. She was the youngest of four children.

Sue was employed by area restaurants before and after her graduation from LEMO Public School in Lewistown in 1957. She enjoyed participating in all competitive sports, especially basketball.

She was united in marriage to Harold Duane Schnitzer on November 20, 1957 at Monticello, Missouri. He preceded her in death on July 25, 2002.

They relocated to San Rafael, California to be near Hamilton Air Force Base where Harold was stationed while serving in the United States Air Force. Sue was employed by Sayre and Toso Insurance, the parent company of Lloyd’s of London, and Ocean Marine Insurance in San Francisco, California. Their daughter was born at Hamilton Field in 1960.

In 1961, they moved to the Quad Cities in Illinois. Their son was born in Rock Island, Illinois in 1964.

They eventually returned to the area where they lived and operated a grocery store in Monticello, Missouri. They later moved their business and family “home” to Lewistown, Missouri, where they owned and operated Harold’s Grocery for several years.

Sue was site manager at the Lewistown Senior Center and was employed by the Dietary Department at Prairie View Rest Home. While at Prairie View, she received certification in dietary management from Blessing/John Wood Community College, where she worked in the College Cuisine Cafeteria.

She went to work at Quinsippi Nursing Home in Quincy, Illinois and later returned to Prairie View Rest Home and assisted in their move to their new facility, Country Aire Retirement Estates. She was dietary manager at Country Aire until her retirement, due to illness.

She was also a correspondent for the Press-News Journal and operated The Treasure Chest Resale Shop in Lewistown, Missouri, during her working years.

An avid reader and cook, Sue enjoyed decorating specialty cakes for family and friends. She had a deep love for birds, her favorites were hummingbirds and cardinals. Her greatest joy was her family and she spent as much time as possible caring for her grandchildren and being entertained by her great-grandchildren.

She is survived by a daughter, Sonja (Joe) Johnson of La Grange, Mo.; a son, Brian (Jana) Schnitzer of Lebanon, Mo.; grandchildren, Caly (Lucas) Cramsey, Aaron (Mikkah) Johnson, Joshua (Laura) Kite, Ciara Johnson, Emily Schnitzer, Sara Schnitzer, Bennett Schnitzer and Mollie Schnitzer; great-grandchildren, Chloe and Ella Johnson, Camden and Leo Kite and Sophia Cramsey; sister, Lota Fern Lewis of Lewistown, Mo.; brother in-law, Carroll (Paula) Schnitzer of Louisiana, Mo.; nephews, Terry Lewis, Sean Schnitzer and Bradley (Bethany) Schnitzer.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, in laws, Morton and Marjorie Schnitzer, brother, Bobby Ed Lewis, sisters, Betty Lou Lewis and Anna B. Howell, brother-in-law, Hubert Thompson and a nephew, Bill Thompson

Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 31, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Arnold’s Funeral Home in Lewistown, Missouri with Rev. Carolyn Leaver officiating.

Visitation will be held Thursday morning from 9 AM until the time of services at Arnold’s Funeral Home in Lewistown. Pallbearers: Aaron Johnson, Joshua Kite, Lucas Cramsey, Bennett Schnitzer, Joe Johnson and Terry Lewis.

Burial will be in the Lewistown Cemetery
