Maywood News

I had a health check-up in St. Louis Friday and the temperature stayed at 101 degrees all the way home. We are having Arizona weather with humidity added. We were happy for the rain on Saturday.

The Hannibal Regional Hospital honored the Volunteer of the Year and the Volunteer Chaplain with a ceremony on Tuesday. Their pictures are hung for a year in the lobby by the volunteer room. The Volunteer of the Year was Jana Suchland and the Volunteer Chaplain was Chris Fountain from Palmyra, Mo. Chris grew up in Maywood and his parents are Jack and Pete Fountain of Maywood. The chaplains are volunteers that are on call and have hours to serve. They are a great asset to the hospital. Jana Suchland has a connection to Maywood since she was the college roommate of Nadine Hogge McKinney.

Judge Rachel Bringer Shepherd and Bobby and their three houseguests attended the Sweinke Picnic at Indian Creek on Sunday afternoon.

Loretta Bringer attended a meeting with the new Officers of the Women’s Club of Hannibal at Mimi’s Café and they worked on committees and the new yearbook.

I was told this week that I think everyone has a connection to Maywood and even when I was growing up people came from outlying areas to shop in Maywood. Unfortunately, there is not a place to shop now and many homes have fallen into disrepair. This seems to be the way of many small towns after the railroads left. Maywood had an active depot and my family used it to ship cream, had a St.Bernard dog shipped to us and many guests came on the train to visit. My uncle Floyd Jones body was shipped to Maywood from California when he passed away. This happened many times with families in Maywood. I always like seeing the people who rode the train dressed in their best and were quite the ladies and gentlemen in appearance. The Roy Weber family moved to Maywood as he was the depot agent. He still has several relatives in the area. The men living in Maywood that I remember working for the railroad were Lon Stewart, Pete Zimmerman, Bill Schafer and Carol Stewart.

Charilyn Stalder enjoyed seeing her grandchildren this week. Jay Stalder is home for a visit from California and Meg Stalder is home from college and Quinn is still at home. They are the children of Charilyn’s son, Bill and Brenda Stalder and live in Quincy.

Jack and Pete Fountain went to visit their daughter, Katrina and her family on Friday. Their granddaughter, Skye was celebrating her birthday on Saturday. She had a Unicorn theme at the Horse Ranch in Highland. The “main” horse had purple glitter on her hooves and her mane was pink. A storm hit about the time the riding was over and some got wet heading to the bunkhouse for the rest of the celebration.

Happy Anniversary to Rachel and Bobby Shepherd as they celebrate their special day on July 21.
