VERNIE H. STICE

Mr. Vernie Houghton Stice, 89, of Lewistown, Mo., died March 27, 2018 in the Lewis County Nursing Home in Canton, Mo.

He was born December 30, 1928 in Deer Ridge, Mo., a son of Para Avington Stice and Tracy Franks Stice. He married Geraldine Rose Krebill on October 15, 1952 in LaBelle, Mo. She passed away February 17, 2013.

Vernie had been a farmer all of his life and got to know many during his years digging graves in the community. Over the years he had worked for Flint McRoberts in Monticello, operated a bulldozer for Lewis County, been a janitor for the Monticello School and worked as a handyman doing odd jobs in the area. He was an Army Veteran of the Korean War serving from 1950 to 1952. He obtained the rank of SGT and received the United Nations Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Commendation Ribbon w/Pendent and Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars.

Survivors include one daughter, Nancy (Joseph) Hallford of Hagerstown, MD; five sons, Douglas (Kay) Stice of Knox City, MO, Dale (Mary) Stice of Monticello, MO, David (Donna) Stice of Canton, MO, Donald (Betty Jo) Stice of Taylor Ridge, IL and Darren (Teresa) Stice of Mexico, MO; 13 grandchildren, Mandy Fooce, Travis (Chari) Bemis, Kyle Stice, Bethany (Cal) Callison, Nathan (Kara) Stice, Jared Stice, Laura (Lonnie) Meyer, Micca (C.J.) Bush, Kaitlin Stice, Courtney Stice, Jessica Stice, Shannon Stice and Brendan Stice; 15 great grandchildren; niece Donna (Bob) Gibson of Princeton, MO and several other nieces and nephews; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Sullivan, Betty Oilar and DiAnne Krebill, and two brothers-in-law, Vernon (Margaret) Krebill and Larry Krebill.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, six brothers; Wilber, Warren, Howard, Cleo, Ralph, and Accie and two sisters, Helen Dorothy Stice and Mary Elizabeth Stice.

Funeral services were held March 31, 2018 at the Davis Funeral Home in Canton, Mo., with Rev. Kenneth “Cal” Callison officiating. Music: Kaitlin and Courtney Stice. Pallbearers: Travis Bemis, Kyle Stice, Nathan Stice, Jared Stice, Lonnie Meyer, C.J. Bush, Brendan Stice and Javan Callison.

 

Visitation was held March 30, 2018 at the Davis Funeral Home in Canton.

Burial with Military Honors was in Monticello Cemetery, Monticello, Mo

The family suggests memorials be made to the Lewis County Nursing Home Auxiliary or Monticello United Methodist Church
