SAMMY HENDERSON

Sammy E. Henderson, 77, of Palmyra, Missouri and formerly of LaGrange, Mo., died October 16, 2017 at the Country Aire Retirement Home in Lewistown, Mo. Sammy was born October 28, 1939, in Monticello, Mo., to Nathaniel and Vangel Sweet Henderson. He was married to Jeanne Solter on September 4, 1964 at the Lewistown Methodist Church in Lewistown, Mo. She preceded him in death. Sammy was a 1958 graduate of LaGrange High School. He later served his country proudly in the United States Army from 1958 to 1961. Professionally Sammy worked as a core maker for 34 years at the Gardner Denver Company in La Grange, Mo. While his children were growing up Sammy enjoyed coaching both baseball and softball. He was a 4-H Horsemanship Leader. Quail hunting and trap shooting were also activities that Sammy took pleasure in. Together with his family Sammy showed horses for 15 years. Always willing to help, Sammy enjoyed working with his grandchildren on their school and 4-H projects. Sammy also loved to attend anything his grandchildren were involved with. Sam actively volunteered at the local food pantry. Sammy loved to read his Bible and was a faithful member of the First Christian Church of Palmyra, Mo.Survivors include a son, Mike Henderson (Debbie) of LaGrange, Mo., a daughter, Kelly Miller (Fred) of Taylor, Mo., four grandchildren, Courtney Roberts (Austin), Justin Miller (Jill Bowen), Nathan Henderson and Jared Henderson and one great grandchild, LillyJean "L.J." Roberts, a brother, Gary Henderson (Karen), a sister, Kay Herrington, a aunt, Nimmie Humphrey of Lewistown, Mo., and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his wife, parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles.Funeral Services were held October 21, 2017 at Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra, Mo. Rev. Mark Carpenter officiated. Visitation was held Oct. 20 at the funeral chapel. Pallbearers:Nathan Henderson, Jared Henderson, Courtney Roberts and Justin Miller.Honorary Pallbearers: Austin Roberts and Lilly Jean Roberts and Jill Kay Bowen.Burial, with full military honors, will be at the Greenwood Cemetery in Palmyra, Mo.
