JUDY CUNNINGHAM

January 26, 2017

Judy Cunningham, 75, of Quincy, died January 16, 2017, after a brief illness. She was born January 20, 1941 in Quincy, Ill. and was married to Joe Cunningham on May 29, 1964 in Philadelphia, Mo. They raised two children: a son, Curt Cunningham (son, Max) of Columbia, Mo.; and a daughter, Sallie Cunningham (husband, Paul Deutsch), of Madison, Wisc. After graduating from Quincy High School in 1959, Judy attended Gem City Business College and worked at Illinois State Bank and in the office at Jack’s Discount Store. After marrying Joe, they moved to Auxvasse, Mo., where she worked at Audrain Medical Center, followed by a move to Ewing, Mo. and 16 years working at the Lewis Co. Health Department. Eventually, Joe and Judy followed their passion to farm full-time, and they farmed in several counties in northeast Missouri over a total of four decades. They lived on farms near Ewing and then near Lewistown, Missouri, where they raised their children. Judy was an avid gardener, member of the Herb Guild, and had several gardens on the Lewistown farm and her Quincy home. She was an artist who painted beautiful landscape and still life creations with oils. Judy enjoyed being a member of the PEO chapter EC of Quincy, and spent a lot of time with her “church ladies” group of friends. Judy and Joe enjoyed politics, and Judy managed multi-county campaigns for local and statewide candidates in Missouri. She also worked for a short time in the Hannibal congressional office for Harold Volkmer. Judy and Joe were Culver-Stockton College basketball season ticket holders and members of the Great River Corvette Club, where she served as Social Director. They also played cards every week with a group of special friends with whom they also enjoyed many great travel adventures. More than anything, Judy loved every moment with her grandson, Max. Survivors include brothers Wayne (Shirley) Hoener of Dallas, Tex., Larry (Penny) Hoener, and Leslie (Kathy) Hoener of Mendon, Ill; and a sister, Linda (Jim) Garrison, of Quincy. She is also survived by her children, Curt and Sallie, son-in-law, Paul, and grandson, Max, as well as several nieces and nephews. Judy was preceded in death by her father, Gilbert Hoener of Mendon, Ill., her mother, Mildred (Gross) Wienhoff, of Quincy, and her husband Joe, of 52 years, who passed away February 18, 2016. Services were held January 19, 2017 at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home, with Dr. Sam Swisher officiating. Visitation was held prior to services. A celebration of life was held at Town and Country Inn and Suites in Quincy after services and burial. Burial: Greenmount Cemetery, Quincy, Illinois. Memorials: Joe and Judy Cunningham Endowed Scholarship Fund at Culver-Stockton College, Canton, Mo. Online condolences may be left at www.hansenspear.com
