Katharine (Lane) Mannigel, 90, of Canton, Mo., formerly of Palmyra, Mo., died at Blessing Hospital November 26, 2016. Katharine was born on November 17, 1926 in Palmyra. She was the daughter of Frances Ann (White) and Dudley J. Lane. Katharine married Ray Mannigel on August 7, 1948 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Palmyra. He survives in Canton, Mo. Katharine’s schooling included Washington Grade School and Palmyra High School. In June of 1948, she became a graduate of the University of Minnesota with a degree in Home Economics. While at the university, she was active in groups including her sororities, Gamma Omicron Beta and Phi Upsilon Omicron. While at the university, she met Ray Mannigel following his return from World War II. After their marriage, Katharine and Ray first lived in Stillwater, Minnesota where she taught high school Home Economics. In the summer of 1950, they and their infant daughter, Linda, moved to the Towler Place near Palmyra, a farm that had been in Katharine’s family for many years. During the years on the farm, David and Sarah were born. Katharine devoted her time to her family and their activities, including 4-H. She served as a 4-H club Community Leader and Foods Project Leader. Katharine was proud of the fact that her family was named a Century 4-H Family. After raising the children, she attended Northeast MO State College (now Truman State University) to update her knowledge, so that she could return to teaching. This time she taught Home Economics at Palmyra R-I High School for several years. After living on the farm for over 50 years, Katharine and Ray moved to an apartment on Lane Street in Palmyra. While living in the Palmyra area, Katharine enjoyed active membership in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church where she was a Sunday school teacher and member of the women’s guild. She was a recipient of the Episcopal Bishop’s Award. Katharine also enjoyed membership in organizations such as the Pierian Club, PEO, Mendelsohn-Emerson Club and Christian Fellowship League. Katharine had many interests including visiting with people, art, reading, Genealogy and collecting family history. She was happy to be a descendent of Martha Ann (Towler) and Dr. John B. White, a pioneer doctor and businessman of Palmyra. One of Katharine’s favorite things to do with the grandchildren was to go with them to the creek on the farm. Family and friends will miss Katharine’s loving and friendly ways, her delicious food and knowledge on a variety of subjects.
