JAMES RYAN

James W. Ryan, 87 of Hannibal, Mo., died Sunday, September 4, 2016 at the Hannibal Regional Hospital. James was born on March 29, 1929 to Thomas H. and Estelle Frances Long Ryan in Geneva, IL. He married Joan Clarice Orendorff in Canton, Mo. on September 3, 1951, She survives. James worked for the Missouri Department of Transportation and retired after 37 years of service. During his time with MoDOT, James played a critical mentoring role in a MoDOT sponsored summer work program for at-risk teenage boys. He had also worked as a machinist and as a farmer. James enjoyed supporting community organizations such as 4H and served on the board of the Sun and Surf Swim Club both located in Canton, Mo.He was also an avid fisherman, line fishing on the Mississippi and also crappie fishing. James was a collector of hats and enjoyed wearing his collection, Most of all he enjoyed the time he shared with his family.James was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Hannibal, MO. Other survivors include: five children: Linda Frances Vlahovich (Gary) of Norfolk, VA, Thomas Carey Ryan of Houston, TX, William Nicholas Ryan (Karen) of Blue Springs, MO, James Lee Ryan (Vicki) of Davenport, IA and Cindy Joan Griesbauer (Michael) of Blue Springs, MO; a sister, Anna Louise Sitki of Springfield, IL; 13 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held Sept. 10, 2016 at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Hannibal, Mo. Memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Family Catholic Church or to the Hannibal Y.M.C.A. in care of the James O’Donnell Funeral Home.
