Norma Jean Scifres died May 9, 2016 at the Country Aire Retirement Estates in Lewistown, Mo. Norma Jean Steele was born September 26, 1928, the daughter of Sylva Mae Matheson and Joseph Alexander Steele of Wyaconda, Missouri.

Norma Jean graduated as valedictorian in 1946 at Wyaconda High School. She attended the Kirksville State Teachers College in Kirksville, Missouri and taught school for three years before marrying the love of her life, Virgil. She was of the Baptist faith.

On April 10 1949, Norma Jean was united in marriage to Virgil Scifres. To this union was born seven children: Harry Joe & Evelyn, Steffenville, Dennie & Betty, Jennilee Carper, LaBelle, Audrey and Randy Rayl, Ewing, Vancell and Sharon, Monticello, Stacy Scifres, Lewistown and Vonnie and Karl Franke, Novelty; 16 grandchildren, and 28 great grandchildren. Two brothers Orville and Johanna Steele, George Steele and one sister June and Louis Ferguson, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Norma Jean was a homemaker, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and was very proud of her family. “Grumpy Gramps” and Gran Ma Jean” loved babysitting, enjoyed camping, country music shows and ball games.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil, parents, sister-in-law Calene Steele and son-in-law Donnie Carper.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, May 12, 2016, in the Coder Funeral Chapel in LaBelle, MO. Pastor Barb Hagerla will officiate the services. Music will be by Camden & Evelyn Scifres singing "In the Garden", "Sweet Hour of Prayer" and "Amazing Grace". Pallbearers will be Paul Scifres, Ryan Scifres, Jason Rayl, Travis Hustead, Lance Scifres & Lucas Stevens. Honorary Pallbearers will be Chris, Phillip, Johnathan Scifres, Matt and Joe Rayl, Kayla McBride, Michelle Megee, Jeannie Walter, Beth Wilke, Nathan Minear.

Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, 2016, with family receiving friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Coder Funeral Chapel.

Burial will be in the New Woodville Cemetery east of Wyaconda, MO.
Memorials may be made to the New Woodville Cemetery, Wyaconda, MO or Country Aire Retirement Estates, Lewistown, Mo.
