Mark E. Shults, 68, of rural Ewing, died January 1, 2023 at the home of his daughter in Waynesville, Mo.

Mark was born on January 29, 1954 in Quincy, Ill., to the late William E. and Elizabeth R. (Wiseman) Shults. He grew up in Ewing and graduated from Highland High School in 1972. He later graduated from Vatterott College. He lived in or near Ewing his entire life. He married Veda Childress in 1975. They had one daughter Brandy Renee.

For 35 years Mark worked at the Gardner-Denver LaGrange Foundry. After its closure he spent 16 years at Knapheide Manufacturing in Quincy until his retirement in 2017.

He was active in the Mississippi Valley Baseball Assn. for many years as a player and a coach. He later enjoyed traveling and coaching his daughter’s softball team. He loved the outdoors and spent many hours hunting, fishing and searching Indian artifacts. One of his greatest joys was teaching his daughter and grandsons how to become ethical hunters. He was also an avid member of the NRA and North American Whitetail Assn. Later in life he experienced traveling multiple European countries with his family.

One of Mark’s favorite pastimes was attending classic rock ‘n roll concerts, with “Woodstock ‘94” being the highlight.He was honored to live on and own a piece of the Centennial Farm of Hobart and Elizabeth Selves Shults.

Mark is survived by his daughter Brandy (Glen Batzinger) of Waynesville, Mo. Four grandsons: Kyle Shults of Fort Huachuca, Ariz.; Wyatt and Noah Horner of Waynesville, and Zane Shults of Waynesville, granddaughter, Madisyn (Eric) Herms of Round Rock, Texas.; great granddaughter, Briar Herms of Round Rock, Texas; two sisters, Jeana Houchins of Ewing; Jan (Buster) Geisendorfer of Monticello; one sister-in-law Kitty Shults of Ewing; nieces, Billie Jo (Sean) Bryan, Felicia Shults, Ashli (Harold Mitten) Houchins, Nicole Goodwin, Bridget (Cody) Browning, Keli (Corey) Huchteman; and several great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Pamela Kay in infancy; brother, Kevin Shults; grandson, Kendall Brighton; brother-in-law Richard Houchins; nephews, Justin and Josh Houchins, Jamie Goodwin and great nephew Kristopher Shults.

Funeral services were held January 10, 2023 at the Ball-Davis Funeral Home in Ewing, Mo., with Rev. Elmer Hagood officiating. Visitation was held Jan. 9, 2023 at the Ball-Davis Funeral Home. Pallbearers: Kyle Shults, Wyatt Horner, Noah Horner, Zane Shults, Glen Batzinger, and Timothy Horner. Honorary Pallbearers: Rodney Farr, Mike Logan, David Dehner, Delaine Whitaker, Danny Butler, Rick Jones, and Gene Sedelmeier.

Burial was in the Dover Cemetery Selves Addition near LaGrange.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Dover Cemetery Association or American Cancer Society.
