Sandra Joan Turnbull 79, of Nelsonville, Mo., died September 7, 2018 at her home.

Sandra was born January 14, 1939, in Quincy, Illinois, to Cecil and Ina Zipse Cook.

She was married to Maurice Wayne Turnbull on December 24, 1959, at their preacher's house in Philadelphia, MO. He preceded her in death August 16, 2018.

Survivors include two Daughters, Christine Schaefer (Gene), Palmyra, MO and Kyla Kordell, Falls Church, VA, four grandchildren, Bryan Schaefer (Nichole), Emerson, MO, Clifford Schaefer (Amy), Camp Lejeune, NC, Jake Schaefer (Katrina), Palmyra, MO and Courtney Odemis, Falls Church, VA, and 8 great grandchildren, Kaleigh, Kinzleigh, Jaydin, Greta, Heidi, Issac, Savannah and Cheyenne Schaefer.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her infant brother, Jerry Cook.

She and her mother graduated together from Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville in the early 1960's. She also went on to earn her Masters degree in 1986. She was a public school teacher for 43 years. She started in a one-room school house and taught most of her career in Lewis County, Missouri.

She was very active in church. She taught Sunday school, played piano and had served as a church clerk.

Sandra helped her husband on the farm, and loved working outdoors. She was an avid gardener, specializing in roses. She had a pilot's license, enjoyed sewing and also decorated cakes for a time.

She was active in Gideons International and was a member of Women's Auxillary. She and her husband were founding members of both Macon Fly Wheel Club and NEMO Old Thrasher's Club. Sandra organized the flea markets for both.

She was an avid reader, especially reading Harlequin romances and loved to play Scrabble.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 12, 2018, at Nelsonville Baptist Church in Nelsonville, MO. Reverend Mark McPike will officiate. Pallbearers : Gene Schaefer, Jake Schaefer, Clifford Schaefer, Eric Spratt, Bryan Schaefer and Ronnie Krigbaum. Honorary Pallbearers: Carl Graves, Tim Bridgman and Courtney Odemis.

The Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra, MO, is in charge of arrangements.
