MACKIE JOHNSTON

Osborn McCracken Mackie Johnston, 78, of Newark, Mo., died August 19, 2015.

Mackie was born on March 16, 1937, in Newark, the son of O.M. Johnston, Jr. and Catherine Caroline Bilyeu Johnston.

He attended the Newark Elementary School, graduated from the Missouri Military Academy, Mexico, Mo., and continued his education with a football scholarship at Culver-Stockton College in Canton.

In the 1960s and 70s Mackie owned and operated the Johnston Implement Company in Lewistown, Missouri and served as mayor.

He married Evelyn Wood, Jan 17, 1981.

Mackie was a member of the Newark Christian Church in Newark, Sumner American Legion Post,LaBelle Masonic Lodge; Scottish Rite Valley of Columbia,Moila Shrine Temple of St. Joseph, and had been a member of the El Kadir Shrine Club of Kirksville and served many years on the Newark Cemetery Association Board.

He enjoyed spending winters in South Texas, he loved his John Deere Tractors, softball, baseball, including the St. Louis Cardinals, riding with the Buck-A-Roos, golfing, hunting, country western music, going to the State Fair and being a Democrat.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Johnston of Newark; daughter, Lori Lee and husband Chris Walker of Shawnee, Kansas; sister, Connie B. and husband Jerry Davis of Petersburg, Ill.; several nieces and nephews and friends.

Mackie was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were held August 22, 2015, at the Doss Funeral Home in Edina, Mo., with Pastor Charles Sharpe officiating.

Burial was in Newark Cemetery, in Newark, Mo. Casket bearers: Ronnie Buswell, David Christie, Larry McKinney, Larry Court Simmons, Wade Goodson, David Bradley, Donnie Roberts, and Keith Tasco. Honorary bearers, Pudge Dodd, Bob Adair and Kenny McKenzie.
