Noel Sweet

Noel Levi Sweet, 91, of LaBelle, Mo., died August 1, 2016, in Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL. He was born near Lewistown, Mo., on May 1, 1925, the son of Elton Levi and Ethel Lucille Pruett Sweet.He was united in marriage to Fay E. Brown on April 28, 1953, in Ewing, Mo., and she preceded him in death on August 25, 2014. Noel graduated from High School at St. Patrick, MO. He was a member and past deacon of the LaBelle Christian Church, assistant Boy Scout Leader, Cub Scout Cub Master, past member of the LaBelle School Board, Lewis County C1 District School Board, a past member of International Union of Operating Engineers Locals 513 and 101, past member of Flying Farmers, Airplane Owners and Pilots Association, Experimental Aircraft Association, Antique Construction Equipment Association and Eagles Club of Quincy, IL. Soon after their marriage Noel and Fay moved to Kansas where Noel worked on the building of the Kansas turnpike. Noel and Fay moved to LaBelle in 1958 and started Sweet Construction and Crane Service, which Noel owned and operated until illness forced him to retire in 2003. He hung the steel for many buildings in Northeast MO, including stores, hospitals, schools, nursing homes and factories. He drove piling for many county bridges and worked for several drainage districts. Noel enjoyed reading and playing croquet with his family. He was a private pilot and was an avid flyer. He loved to play his guitar, which he taught himself to play at 78. He loved dancing, motorcycles, camping and traveling, visiting 48 states, Canada and Mexico several times. Noel and Fay met at a dance in 1952, and danced about once a week for fifty years. Surviving are two children Ron (Ellen) Sweet of Columbia, MO and Diane Sweet of Kansas City, MO one daughter-in-law Catherine Armbrust of Columbia, MO, two grandchildren, Shanon (Mike) McCallister of Hull, IL, Ian McHugh of Kansas City, MO, one step-granddaughter, Madeline Koenig Schappe, eight great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.Noel was also preceded in death by his parents, one daughter Debra Sweet, two sons, Randall Sweet and Eric Sweet, one grandson Ryan Sweet, three sisters Angel Smith, Vangel Henderson, and Berneice Wheeler. Graveside services for the immediate family will be held in Ewing Memorial Cemetery at a later date. Visitation was held August 6, 2016, in the Coder Funeral Chapel in LaBelle, MO.
